Not all headaches are the same, and not all headaches respond to the same treatment. At Evolve Chiropractic, we assess the role of the neck and upper back in your headache pattern and provide care where appropriate.
Headaches and the Neck
Cervicogenic headaches originate from dysfunction in the cervical spine — the joints, muscles, and nerves of the neck. They are distinct from migraines, though the two can sometimes overlap.
Signs that your headache may have a cervical component include:
- Headache that starts at the base of the skull or back of the neck
- Pain that wraps around to the forehead, temples, or behind the eye
- Headache that worsens with prolonged postures or neck movement
- Neck stiffness or restricted range of motion alongside the headache
- Headache that responds to changes in position or rest
How Chiropractic Care May Help
If assessment confirms a cervical contribution to your headaches, care may include:
- Cervical joint mobilisation — gentle techniques to restore movement in restricted segments
- Upper thoracic treatment — the upper back often contributes to neck dysfunction
- Soft tissue therapy — addressing trigger points and tension in the suboccipital, trapezius, and cervical musculature
- Postural and ergonomic guidance — reducing mechanical load on the cervical spine during daily activities
- Home exercises — stretching and strengthening to support long-term improvement
It is important to note that not all headaches are cervicogenic. If our assessment suggests your headaches are primarily migrainous or require further investigation, we will discuss appropriate referral options with you.
When to Seek Urgent Care
While most headaches are not dangerous, you should seek immediate medical attention if you experience:
- A sudden, severe headache unlike anything you have experienced before
- Headache accompanied by fever, stiff neck, and sensitivity to light
- Headache with visual disturbances, confusion, or difficulty speaking
- Headache following a head injury
